Pantone’s long-standing tradition of selecting a colour for the coming year is something that every interior designer looks forward to. The chosen colour (or in this case, colours) sets the tone for the year, influencing styles and trends across industries.
Careful consideration is put into the Pantone colour selection. After the unprecedented year that was 2020, Pantone has selected two colours for 2021 that represent strength and hope - something that many of us will want to embody over the next few months!
Here at Industville, we are always interested in how the latest trends can best be incorporated into home interiors. This year, there are plenty of opportunities to embrace the stunning 2021 colours.
Ultimate Grey and Illuminating
When you reflect back on 2020, it’s easy to see why Pantone chose a soft grey and pale, buttery yellow as the colours for 2021.
For many, Ultimate Grey represents the resilience and steadfastness that we have all had to take on during the challenges of the pandemic. It is a classic colour that exudes strength and deeper thought while still offering some warmth and comfort.
Illuminating is a smooth yellow tone that conveys positivity, warmth, and hope – the perfect feelings to take into 2021. Illuminating brings cheer and memories of sunshine, making it the perfect aspirational colour to embrace and enjoy this year.
When combined, the colours convey a message of optimistic fortitude, and both will no doubt contribute to some beautiful interiors.
Incorporating the Pantone Colours in Your Home

Cushions, Blankets and Layers
Grey and yellow contrast beautifully and nowhere is this more evident than with small details that add warm touches around the home.
Adding colour details with fabrics around the home is a simple but effective way to update your look without committing to more permanent changes. Styling cushions and blankets will help you experiment with colours and combinations.
Bright bursts of yellow in cushions and blankets or throws look great against grey furniture. Layering your bed or sofa in warm-toned fabrics with these colours is another excellent way to ensure your space is stylish but liveable, soothing and cosy.
If you already have lots of bright colour in the space you’re looking to remodel, you could opt for cushions or design pieces with grey tones to add a bit of modern sophistication.
Combining grey furniture with sunny cushions or vice versa can be a great way to reflect Pantone’s intention to show how different elements come together to support and complement one another.

Painting your walls is one of the easiest and quickest ways to breathe new life into any room.
Giving your walls a coat of grey paint helps to create a timeless space that any décor pieces would work well with. Soft greys compliment both industrial aesthetics and sleek minimalism – it’s a great, versatile colour that can be incorporated into any style.
Yellow walls can also make a stunning choice, especially when used to make a statement. Soft yellow walls bring joy to any room without being too loud.
Bouncing light off your newly painted walls with Industrial ceiling lights can further enhance the richness of the grey or yellow tones, making them more striking and creating a stylish space that will feel both luxurious and relaxing.
If you want to take things a step further, you could also opt for wallpaper designs that include Ultimate Grey and Illuminating, adding both on-trend colours and patterns to your interiors.
Yellow Front Doors
Another direction that many are taking with Illuminating is to paint their front door yellow. Why not consider making your home just as inviting from the outside as it is indoors?
This burst of instant charm sets the tone before you even enter the sanctuary you have created inside!
The happy brightness looks especially good when contrasted with grey or darker exteriors.
Grey Kitchens with Yellow Accents
As we have already established, both grey and yellow make brilliant statement colours, adding something unexpected and intentional to tired spaces, especially when contrasted against one another.
Opting for grey furnishings in your kitchen with bold yellow chairs or appliances can take the heart of the home to a new level. Cabinets in Ultimate Grey make an excellent backdrop to the pops of colour that Illuminating can add.
Even adding subtle touches of yellow around the kitchen with tea towels, mugs, or placemats can instantly bring an injection of colour and playful contrast.
If you’re happy with your current interior but still want to honour the 2021 colours, you can turn to your DIY skills! Painting basic décor pieces like picture frames, vases, or previous DIY projects will help you effortlessly tie your interiors together with a cohesive colour palette.
These kinds of small items can easily be transformed with trendy colours in mind. If you’re feeling brave, you could also tackle larger pieces like old side tables or draws to add character and update them for 2021.
